The Harbuck Scholarship honors Ally Harbuck, a free-spirited creative writing major from Savannah who died in a traffic accident
in 2005 at the age of nineteen, one week before the end of her freshman year at Georgia Southern. She wrote for The George-Anne and was active in the Gay-Straight Alliance and the National Organization for Women on campus. Her parents, Debi and David Harbuck of Savannah, raised the funds to endow the scholarship.
Each year, professors in the Department of Writing and Linguistics nominate students for the scholarship based on writing samples gathered in class. The recipient is a Georgia Southern rising sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in Creative Writing who has maintained a minimum 3.0 grade point average. The award is given on a competitive basis, and previous recipients may submit new work for consideration each year.
